Double the Joy, Double the Support: MIHRA and Winning & Twinning Celebrate Twins in Calabar!
The vibrant city of Calabar, Cross River State, Nigeria, was painted with an extra layer of joy and connection on March 7th, 2025. Mind Innovation and Health Reform Africa (MIHRA), a leading Nigerian NGO dedicated to research and advocacy in the mental health space, partnered with Winning and Twinning to host a heartwarming event that brought together twins and those who cherish them.
Imagine a gathering filled with mirrored smiles, shared glances, and an undeniable bond that only twins truly understand. This was the atmosphere as attendees networked, shared personal stories, and celebrated the unique experience of being a twin. The air buzzed with laughter, camaraderie, and a sense of belonging.
However, the day wasn’t just about fun and celebration. It also shone a crucial spotlight on a vital aspect of well-being: mental health. Shedrack Nwaokocha, the co-founder of MIHRA, took to the stage to address the gathering. His words resonated deeply as he highlighted the pervasive mental health challenges faced by young people across the globe. He emphasised the critical importance of prioritising mental well-being and promoting a culture of open conversation and support.
Shedrack further highlighted the impactful work MIHRA is spearheading in creating safe spaces and support groups within African universities. This initiative aims to provide young adults with accessible mental health resources and a community where they feel safe, seen, heard, and understood. The partnership with Winning and Twinning provided a unique platform to extend this message, reaching the twin community known for its strong bonds and shared experiences.
The event served as a powerful reminder that mental health is an integral part of overall well-being, regardless of one’s unique circumstances. For twins, who often share an incredibly close and sometimes complex relationship, like the intense comparison of their individuality, having access to support and understanding their unique differences is particularly important for them.
More than just an event, this collaboration between MIHRA and Winning and Twinning is a testament to the power of community and the importance of prioritising mental health for everyone. Bringing together twins and mental health advocates, they created a space where joy and support intertwined, leaving a lasting positive impact on all who attended.
This is a call to continue to champion initiatives like these that foster connection, celebrate our unique experiences, and most importantly, prioritise the mental well-being of individuals across Nigeria and Africa. The echoes of laughter and shared stories from Calabar serve as a powerful reminder that together, we can build a healthier and more supportive future for all.
